Is there a way in software to read audio CD data direct?
I'd like to be able to read-in audio CDs losslessly but suspect the
normal CD transport included with a computer will be of poor quality
leading to read errors. Background info is at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Book_(audio_CD_standard)
As I understand it some errors can be losslessly corrected but others
are more extensive and may only be masked by a CD player taking its
best guess at what was missed. I guess a conventional CD rip program
sucks in the CD as fast as possible including just accepting the
guesses.
My experience of ripping CDs under Windows and playing them back via
my DAC on the hi-fi (i.e. the same DAC was used whether the CDs were
played from the hi-fi CD player or from the computer) was that the
bass became lumpy compared with the original. Since both systems were
fully digital up to the DAC they should have sounded identical.
A better ripping program may be all that I need. If it received some
guessed data from the disc I would expect it to try to reread a few
times and _report_ any failures rather than just masking them.
Any ideas?

Sounds odd. It shouldn't do that. Perhaps the hi-fi CD player does
something to the digital data ?

You could try cdparanoia or EAC.

Thanks for the pointers. Since your post I've looked at both but am
now trying to get EAC to do what I want. Thanks to a number of web
sites I think I'm getting there.... |

By the way: When you were testing the difference in sound quality, what was
the format of the files you were playing from your computer ? That is,
what format did you rip the CD to ? It wouldn't happen to have been MP3
or WMA or something like that, would it ?

If you mean way back, when I played both through the same DAC, I
cannot remember now what I used on the PC but it would have been
lossless under Windows. |

Well, if EAC is doing what I think it is then it's doing an awesome
job especially when coupled with, and automatically invoking,
compressors and AccurateRip. On one wav file Lame failed to convert to
mp3 but on all the rest the system's been flawless. |
